New Zealand's UV levels are among the highest in the world — our clear skies and low ozone mean skin burns faster here than almost anywhere. Yet most people still use sunscreen they hate: thick, greasy, white-cast formulas that end up left in the drawer. The fix is simple: modern Japanese and European sunscreens are so light and elegant you'll actually want to wear them daily. Here's how our favourites compare.
The Japanese icon: Anessa Perfect UV Skincare Milk SPF50+
Anessa's Skincare Milk ($46) is Japan's #1 sunscreen year after year, and the one beauty editors keep in every bag. Super waterproof against sweat, water and sebum, invisible on skin, and it actually grips foundation so makeup lasts longer. For face and body.
Prefer a gel? Anessa Perfect UV Gel SPF50+ ($46) is 50% skincare ingredients with a smooth, primer-like finish — its auto-booster technology makes the UV veil stronger when you sweat.
The sensitive-skin pick: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF50+
Anthelios ($37.95) is the French pharmacy classic: fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, non eye-stinging, with a genuinely invisible finish. The safest choice for reactive skin and the best value on this list.
The oily-skin specialist: SkinCeuticals Physical Matte UV Defense SPF 50
Physical Matte ($76) is 100% mineral (zinc + titanium) with an oil-absorbing base that stays matte even in humidity. Ideal for oily skin, and the gentlest option after laser or peels once your clinician clears SPF.
The luxury option: Clé de Peau UV Protective Cream SPF50+
CPB's UV Protective Cream ($119) feels like a luxury skincare cream, delivers 10-hour moisture with zero white cast, and protects against blue light and pollution as well as UV. Sunscreen you look forward to applying.
For sport and swimming: Shiseido Expert Sun Protector SPF50+
Shiseido's Expert Sun lotion ($49) uses technology that makes protection stronger on contact with water — built for beach days, boats and outdoor sport.
How much to apply (the step everyone gets wrong)
Most people apply a quarter of the amount sunscreens are tested at. For the face and neck you need roughly a quarter teaspoon — about two full finger-lengths. Reapply every 2 hours in direct sun, and remember: SPF is also the single best anti-ageing and anti-pigmentation product you own. If you're using actives like vitamin C or retinol, daily SPF is what locks in their results.
